10 Cent – Fire Tinder to Disinfect Wounds and Start a Blaze!

Okay… well we all know that cotton balls make a great everyday carry, tinder for firestarting… The problem is that they only burn for about 10 to 20 seconds.

So many folks add petroleum jelly to extend their burn time.

Extend Burn AND Treat Wounds
But if you want to extend the burn time of your cotton balls AND add a valuable first aid item to your survival kit… Try using a dab of triple antibiotic ointment on your cotton ball instead of petroleum jelly.

Your antibiotic cotton balls will light with a spark and burn for 2 – 3 minutes giving you the time you need to build a sustainable fire.

PLUS your cotton balls can be used to clean and disinfect wounds in the field.

For your convenience, here are links to all the gear you’ll need for this project:

Thanks David! I’ve used cotton balls and Vaseline in the past for wind and wetness situations. I’ll give the triple antibiotic a go too! 🙂

You didn’t mention if the ointment from the dollar store will work as well? I am always looking for the inexpensive ways to solve the problems of survival I want them to work as well. Having reached the ripe old age of seventy five I dont have a lot of time to fail trying out things that dont work. Thanks

Another fire starter to consider… a small amount of waterless hand sanitizer can start a fine very easily. It is usually 60 to 70% alcohol and also can be used as a disinfectant.
    best regards
