Bear Grylls Survival Torch Review - Tough & Waterproof

When I first took the Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Torch out of the packaging I was immediately impressed with how rugged and substantial this flashlight felt in my hands. This flashlight comes with the Bear Grylls Priorities of Survival Pocket Guide and a single AA battery to get you started. It also has a few surprises inside... which we’ll talk about in a few moments... The Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Torch reminds me a bit of my old school MAG Lights and is nearly 6 inches long and weights about 4 ounces.

Construction The Survival Torch head, barrel and cap are all made out of a nice quality aluminum that is fiery orange in color... so it won’t be easily lost if it is dropped on the ground or in the woods. The barrel is over molded with a thick rubber, similar in look and feel to all of the Bear Grylls knives and tools. It feels good when I hold it and is very grippy even when wet.

The LED The Bear Grylls Survival Torch has 1 L.E.D. bulb and simply twists on and off by turning the flashlight head like this... the cross hatch tread on the flashlight head give some grip to make turning the head easier. The beam is reasonably strong and will allow you to see quite well up to about 50 or 60 feet.

Power and Run Time The Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Torch / flashlight puts out 24 lumens with a full alkaline battery and in our tests this flashlight was still putting out over 10 lumens after of full 24 hours of continuous run time and it was still going... although the bulb was dimming a lumen or two every hour after that... I can’t believe that it was just a few short years ago that a good flashlight would run maybe a hour on new batteries... IF your bulb didn’t burn out first. AND the amazing thing is that over 24 hours of light is generated with ONLY ONE AA battery. As with all L.E.D. bulbs, this one should last for years if you don’t accidentally bash it with a rock or something... To replace the battery simply turn the torch head counter clock wise and swap in a new battery.

Waterproof Construction And it’s a bonus that the Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Torch is waterproof... The internal electronics are protected from water by this rubber ring that seals the water out went the flashlight is in water up 1 meter. I wouldn’t recommend taking this flashlight diving, but it’s nice to know that it’s not going to fail you in a downpour or if you drop it into you cooking pot or a stream. On the butt end of the flashlight there is a lanyard hole for tying the torch to stuff or adding a lanyard.

Roomy Waterproof Compartment This butt cup twists off revealing a pretty nifty two and three eights inch deep by one inch wide storage container that is also waterproof through the use of this rubber ring. Inside Gerber includes: 5 hefty survival matches with a sand paper striker board and a small wad of tinder for starting a fire. All are sealed in their own waterproof bags and should be quite dry if you ever need them. Because of the generous size of the waterproof compartment these items are easy to repack.If you carry fire steel with you as a separate item, this compartment is large enough to carry a backup battery and tinder wad.
