In every crisis, every storm, every adventure gone wrong, there’s always one person everyone turns to when things go sideways. Maybe, that’s you.
The MSK-1 Elite X is built for that moment. Ready for daily tasks, broken plans and long nights around the fire when others look to you for help.
I left the corporate world in 2012, took my design training and years of testing knives on YouTube, and went looking for my perfect survival knife. I couldn’t find it, so I designed the original MSK-1 with my friend Jeff Freeman.
Our first MSK-1 Kickstarter in 2016 funded the knife that has been proven in the field for 10 years. Yet two requests kept coming up: “Can you make it lighter without losing the toughness?” and “Can you make the Kydex sheath have more carry options?”
The Elite X is my answer to both.

02 25% Lighter

When I designed the original MSK-1, I assumed toughness meant a full 1/4" slab of steel. Anything thinner felt like a compromise. In 2022, I started experimenting with Swedish 14C28N and realized the MSK-1 didn’t need to be thicker to be tough.
By optimizing the grind, relying on MSK-1’s fine-tuned geometry and switching to 14C28N, I shaved 25% off the weight and thickness while boosting real-world toughness, versatility and fine cutting ability. Now the MSK-1 is much lighter on your belt and in your hand, yet it still begs to chop, baton and carve all day.

03 The Steel
Swedish Sandvik 14C28N
I first heard about Swedish Sandvik 14C28N steel around 2022 and was immediately intrigued. It promised something rare: a true balance of toughness, edge retention and corrosion resistance. We tested it on our 2022 MSK-1 EDGE Kickstarter, and it exceeded expectations. We knew it had to be part of this knife.
Designed specifically for cutlery, 14C28N uses a nitrogen-enhanced formula to stay tough without becoming brittle, resist rust and take a razor edge with ease.

Fire is life in a survival situation. With the MSK-1 Elite X, fire is built in: bow-drill divot, striker and mini ferro rod, partnered with the Gen3 21-item micro survival kit in the handle. It’s extra insurance to get you safely home.
Three hand positions and fine-tuned geometry let the MSK-1 adapt instantly to whatever you throw at it: chop, split, cut, carve, crush, break and drill with control in a single, do-it-all blade.

08 The Story
Everyone Thought I Was Crazy…
For nearly two years I put my life on hold. I almost ran out of money more times than I can count. I even paused my YouTube channel, Ultimate Survival Tips. But I had a strong sense that I was destined to develop MSK-1 (and now the Elite X). So once I started, there was no looking back.
I honestly forgot about some of these early sketches. It was fun to dust them off and put them in a timeline.

A Family Business, by Design
Ten years ago our whole crew hit the beach together: Carin and I, our two very tiny grandkids, and our adult kids—Ben and his wife Michelle, and our daughter Tai with her husband Gabe. The second photo is from our vow renewal at a local camp ten years later, with the family bigger, louder and a lot more fun—now six grandkids strong with another on the way.

Carin and my recent vow renewal was a sweet time with our family.

What warranty does Elite X have?
Every MSK-1 knife is backed by our Limited Lifetime Warranty. It’s built as a long-term, hard-use tool, not a disposable gadget. See the full warranty in the MSK-1 Quick Start User Guide.
Where is Elite X made?
Designed and field-tested in the USA. Crafted in Yangjiang, China, the “City of Knives,” where knife making goes back more than 1,400 years. It’s home to the best manufacturing partner I’ve ever had. For you, that means precise grinds, tight fit and finish, and custom-knife quality at a fair price.
Is it legal to carry a fixed-blade knife where I live?
